Review: Clarity by Kim Harrington & Giveaway

Clare is used to being an outsider in her small tourist town -- it comes with the territory when your freaky family runs a psychic shop. However, when a young tourist is murdered, the town erupts into chaos. Everyone is a suspect, and the only way to find the truth may be to ask the one person who can relive the victim's final moments: Clarity "Clare" Fern, local pariah and psychic extraordinaire. But can Clare stay one step ahead, or will she be the next target in the killer's crosshairs?

The characterization in this novel is riveting. Readers will love Clare from page one, when she elbows an obnoxious bully soundly in the gut and starts the novel off with a bang. The poor girl doesn't have it easy in her small town, where being psychic makes her a "freak," but she doesn't take the abuse lying down. It is refreshing to see a teenage heroine who isn't afraid to fight back against the bullies, rather than crying in a bathroom stall. Readers will sympathize with spunky Clare all the more strongly because she doesn't wallow in the stereotypical angst and self-pity.

Despite her pariah status, Clare has a bit of a love triangle (or square?) to contend with, and Kim Harrington manages to make the reader invest in each romance. The various potential heroes have a unique spark that turns them into more than just a one-dimensional plot device. Gabriel is the bad boy who will immediately pique readers' interest, while a secret tragedy in his past gives shade to his character. Justin is the good guy who made an irreparable mistake (and I applaud Clare for refusing to overlook it). Then there's Nate, the best-friend-but-maybe-more, and Stephen, the former-enemy-but-maybe-more. Despite the ubiquity of love triangles, Harrington brings a realism to Clare's relationships that prevents them from feeling forced or cliche. Clarity evokes the spectrum of human bonds with subtle power, ranging from the various beaux, to the endearing brother/sister relationship between Clare and Perry, and the dysfunctional parent relationship with their flaky mother.

On top of a stellar cast of characters, Harrington blends mystery and mysticism to create a captivating crime novel. The unique take on psychic ability lends nicely to the murder mystery element. Clare can relive the memories and emotions imprinted on an object just by touching it, while Perry can see the dead and their mother can read minds. I especially enjoyed Clare's fascinating ability, and loved the way it raised almost as many questions as it answered while she desperately tried to find the killer before they struck again.

Though this is a murder mystery, it was not excessively gruesome. Readers will be able to enjoy the tension and the thrill of the chase, while still being caught up in the lively and playful tone of the narrator. Clare's voice blows through like a breath of fresh air, full of snark and vivacity. She is an utterly loveable heroine, with complex layers that hide a sweet vulnerability beneath her bravado. Clare's appeal will draw readers into this supernatural saga, and the suspense will keep them on the edge of their seats, racking their brains to solve the crime before the final heart-pounding reveal.

i would love the ability to go into my boyfriend's mind and convince him to FINALLY propose to me. the man's driving me insane!

I think the ability to touch an object and see it's history would be pretty cool. However, reading minds would definitely be very useful.

Thanks for the review and giveaway!

I totally would want to read minds, but at my own free will. Not have to hear people's minds. So if they start thinking something boring or something I really don't want to hear, I can turn it off, like a radio or something. That'd be awesome. I'm always wondering what people think of me (I'm way too self conscious), so I'd be able to hear what they like or don't like about me and be able to maybe fix it (or not be friends with them lol).

Many powers are a double edge sword, I'm not sure what I would really want to be able to do, I think move things with my mind would be the most preferable option

Definitely a toss up between reading minds (only when I want to though) and telekinesis. Tough choice!

Telekinesis. I'm completely fascinated by it.

This review is amazeballs, Casey!

"Clare's voice blows through like a breath of fresh air, full of snark and vivacity. She is an utterly loveable heroine, with complex layers that hide a sweet vulnerability under her bravado." I will read anything you ever write! Grocery list, journal, review, sticky notes, or notes from class, because your writing is beautiful! It flows smoothly, elegantly, and brings the story to life in a few short paragraphs.

Now, on to my psychic power... hmm. I will probably be the only one to say this, but I would love to be able to talk to ghosts. They know things that no one else knows, and I think it would be fascinating to learn about their history. They could explain how things really happened, and I might be able to help a few out with their last wishes and whatnot.

Clarity sounds awesome. I did a book order yesterday and looked at this one twice and dismissed it for something else. I wish I hadn't now. Although I've seen quite a few people receive this in their IMM posts, I've not actually read too many reviews on it.

I'm not entering the giveaway as I'm in the UK.

These reviews are starting to pop up and it looks great! :) Thanks for the amazing review. And so many stars there. ;D I've added it to my want list.

Um, ability... I think I would like to be able to move things with my mind. I know I wouldn't want to read peoples minds. To hear and know the truth all the time might be to hard to handle. ;)

Thank you!

Ashley said...

Most definitely the ability to move objects with my mind. I'm not at all interested in reading people's minds, partly because I would hear WAY more than I needed to, but also because I think people and their thoughts are far more boring than we wish they were. However, being able to put thoughts into your mind might be pretty cool...

I would love to be able to move things with my mind from anywhere in the world just buy thinking about the object. :)

I think reading minds would get me into too much trouble and moving things with my mind would make me too lazy. Not sure if it's really a psychic power, but I would love to be able to get a full night's sleep in about three minutes. I can only imagine how much more work I could get done and how much more fun I could have (and how many more books I could read!) if I didn't have to spend so much time sleeping!

Thanks for hosting the giveaway, Clarity sounds great!

Answer: I don't have to wish...I am psychic and from a long line of gifted ancestry. My gift is dreams. I can't tell you more than that. It's not something I talk about, but those closest to me know I have it.
It's not frightening, it's helpful and it is a gift from God.

I've left you a post on your other page, and I'm a new follower! :]

If I could have any psychic ability, I think I'd like the chance to read minds. Most people wouldn't like to hear what anyone else really thought of them, but I don't mind the honesty. Although, I do feel that having this ability would come with some extra cost and probably make me insanely insane, but then again I already kinda am so what's not to lose, right?! lol.

Anyway, I'm a new follower, but I absolutely love reading books and I've been DYING to get my hands on this book for a while now. :)

Hey Casey,

Thank you for the awesome review, and also for hosting this giveaway! :)

In all honesty, I think all psychic abilities would be a blessing & a curse - both to be enjoyed, and borne with great difficulty at the same time. There are so many abilities that come to mind, but somehow they all seem to violate the rights of others, or come with too much responsibility and/or too much information!

But if I had to choose...and I could tailor-make a psychic ability to suit my needs, I'd want the ability to heal people, by touch or by my thoughts. I know it sounds too much like a God complex, but it's not because I'm vain...just because it's what I want to do with my life (as you know, I'm in medicine). If I couldn't heal them entirely, at least the ability to put their mind at ease, or take away their pain. Now that, would be an amazing ability.

Thanks for allowing us to share our thoughts. Have an awesome day!

If I could have a psychic ability, it would either be the ability to communicate with animals or the ability to read people's auras or minds.

Thank you for your review. It definitely sounds like a fascinating read (and a LOVELY cover to top it off), I originally thought it would be a happy, angel novel...never would've thought it was a mystery novel!

I am definitely curious about Stephen, and I had to laugh everytime I read a "and-maybe-more". =)
