Waiting on Wednesday: The DUFF by Kody Keplinger & A Call for Questions

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to highlight upcoming releases we're anxiously awaiting!

This week's WoW is a day late so that I could post my scheduled review for the Crossed Out blog tour.

Coming September 7, 2010!

The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "Duffy," she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren't so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Description from Goodreads

Kody was born and raised in rural western Kentucky, where she attended high school and began writing her first long pieces of fiction. Kody wrote THE DUFF during her senior year at McLean County High School.

Kody is now nineteen and attending Ithaca College in New York where she's majoring in writing and finishing her second novel to be published by Poppy in Fall 2011.

She loves books, converse tennis shoes, New York City, and popular TV teen dramas. When she isn't writing, she's spending time with her friends and, most likely, doing piles and piles of homework she has neglected.

My thoughts: This book is a stunning look at teenage life in a fresh and utterly realistic way. The themes may be a little provocative, but they are handled in a classy, tactful and insightful manner. It's incredible that Kody Keplinger wrote this novel at such a young age, and yet it makes perfect sense because only a teen could have written such a true and non-cliche account of some of the hardest issues teens face. This book had a great message and delivered it powerfully and memorably.

My pick this week is a book I've already read and really enjoyed (full review coming soon), but I wanted to mention it so that other readers can get excited for the release too! Kody Keplinger has kindly agreed to do an interview with me, so this post is also a way to share some info about Kody and The DUFF and hopefully get some reader questions to include in the interview! Please email me any questions you might have for the author of this exciting debut novel (Kody was only 17 when she wrote it!) by August 22. Thanks!

Great review! Such a good book, but with sensitive issues, all of them handled well. Definitely one to pick up.
